Italian artist Paolo Ventura began his career as a fashion photographer before he became a storyteller, building highly detailed, miniature diorama-like sets, including the little figures, and then shooting them to appear life size. His “War Souvenir” series from 2006 traced the horrors of a fictionalized war that in fact took place in the closet of Ventura’s apartment. “Winter Stories,” from 2008, provided glimpses into the life of an old circus performer. “The Automaton of Venice” tells the story of an elderly Jewish watchmaker in the Venice ghettos during World War II, who creates an automaton to keep him company.

Born in Cuba in 1968, raised in Italy and now a resident of New York City, Paolo Ventura studied at the Academia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan. His work has been exhibited internationally, including at Forma International Center for Photography, Milan, Rencontres de la Photographie, Arles, and Maison Europeenne de la Photographie, Paris.
