The entire focus of 2 States has suddenly shifted to Arjun Kapoor and Alia Bhatt’s rumored relationship more than the story itself. Very few actually acknowledge the film as the cinematic adaptation of Chetan Bhagat’s bestselling novel 2 States. Bhagat, who recently bagged a Filmfare for Best Screenplay for Abhishek Kapoor’s Kai Po Che (Based on Bhagat’s The 3 Mistakes Of My Life) has written out 2 States as well.

Ask the film’s lead lady about her role and the actress enthusiastically volunteers information. “I play the role Ananya Swaminathan who is a Tamil Brahmin. She is not a very caricature South Indian character. Her twang is South Indian but she speaks with that nuance only with her father. Besides that she speaks very normal Hindi,” said Alia.

Alia Bhatt and Deepika Padukone

The actress won’t be following Deepika Padukone’s footsteps when it comes to playing a South Indian. Padukone was a full blown Tamil character with a prominent Tamil influenced speech. But Alia’s Tamil character is more contemporary and cosmopolitan when it comes to diction as the actress claims that her Hindi will be normal in the film.

The actress claimed to have learnt basic Tamil for the film but her proficiency is clearly limited. However when asked about any classical dance number in the film, Alia said, “No I don’t have a classical number as much but have a little Bharatnatyam piece in the film.”
