While last year was a year dominated by powerful male voices, this year has been the crowning year for the swooning female voices that have rendered and belted some of the most popular, enticing and extremely melodious numbers, one that elevated us to the levels of love, passion, compassion and yes, dance as well!

From an urban tune of sounds to a more traditional folksy number, from an ultimately peppy item song to a honey coated romantic ballad, 2013 was high on melody and tempo and here’s to the ones who made it all possible and help our leading ladies swoon to their tunes.

Set in the 1950s, this was a classic love story and what way to celebrate more than an awesome-ly placed sweet number that tugged at our hearts and churned out the lovey-dovey feelings like no one else! Monali Thakur who had earlier shone with her peppy numbers paced it up with a rather slow Sawaar Loon that reminisced a new age Shreya Ghoshal budding in the lovely singer. The tune, the emotion and the coy tenderness that was rendered was abso-dlippin’-lutely fantastic!

Definitely one of the best folksy beats we have ever heard in recent times, Pritam chose to go with last year’s sensation Shalmali Kholgade who delivered another powerful track, thanks to her robust attitude. High on energy, oomph and that concoction of sweetness with a lot of boldness was what elevated the song to an all time high. The moment she went, ‘Itna maaza kyu raha hai, tune hawa mein bhang milaya’, that husk in her tone just made us go weak! Ahh!

There’s almost nothing that this woman cannot do! The new age Lata Mangeshkar of sorts, Shreya Ghoshal made all of us teary eyed with the immensely thoughtful and lovelorn Sun Raha Hai Na Tu number from Aashiqui 2. While we missed Shreya’s iconic romantic numbers of late, this one surely made up for all that loss. Personally a favourtie, Shreya infused life into the tear-jerker of sorts and somehow helped it connect with the masses like wild fire! I call this one her second best, after that Aami Je Tomar number.

Another reality show find, Bhoomi reverberated the perfect mix of Gujrati traditional folk with the Western beats to create something so spectacular as Ram Chahe Leela from the Ramleela album. Orgasmic to the ears, seductive and extremely sensuous, Bhoomi Trivedi spelt Sex like no other! And boy, did she succeed! She blossomed and the rest was history! The treasured find of this year in the music department will definitely be Bhoomi, hands down!

There can be no one better than Sunidhi Chauhan for item numbers and when it came to her regular Dhoom revisits, we were sure of having a spectacularly sung item song trudging on the lines of a Dhoom Machale Dhoom or a Crazy Kiya Re, both of which gained immense popularity on release. Kamli, although not as catchy as the other two did give a certain gravitas to an otherwise dull Dhoom album, which hardly had one or two songs to boast of! Zany and eccentric, Kamli was a perfect song for the iconic Katrina moment in the film.

The slightly Indian touch that Sona Mohapatra rendered to this Fukrey number was out of the world! The slow but upbeat Punjabi lyric romantic number was soulful, melodious and a treat to the eardrums as we kept playing it on the loop! Based on the lines of Sasural Genda Phool, this song was folksier with a lot of upbeat western acoustic guitar harmonics. Plus the raw, and sonorous twist that Sona’s voice adds to the rustic charm and feel of the song is fabulous!

She made the nation go Pareshaan last year and this year started off with a big bang as she took over the vocals for the racy item number from Race 2. The addictive tunes and her fetching voice made up for a rather awesome hearing as Lat Lag Gayi seduced the ordinary layman with the dash of zesty zatang! I myself could not stop going gaga over this steamy number. And Shalmali, you are definitely the woman of the season for now!

She might have excelled lip-syncing to Madhuri Dixit’s Ghagra but when it came to choosing, we chose Kabira over Ghagra as Rekha Bharadwaj’s genius came out to the fore in this rather somber track. One of my personal favourites from the list of female singers today, Rekha’s voice has that tenacity and the tone to pull off an earthy rustic number with elan. But when she challenged herself with a soulful, semi classical emotional number like Kabira, she excelled with aplomb. No wonder she reminded us of the Iktara number but Kabira was no lesser!
