The box office journey of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat began yesterday amidst much hullabaloo over a controversy that has stretched over a year and continues. Film trade analysts are bullish about the period drama, which has got mixed reviews for its story but widely hailed for its visual appeal and impactful performances.


Amid widespread protests around cinema halls by various fringe outfits in Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, Padmaavat had released in the theaters on January 25.


After collecting an amount of 19 crores on its first day and 5 crores on its paid previews on Wednesday, our early estimates for the movie on it’s Day 2 suggest that the collections would be between 31-33 crores.

The movie had also earned well at the box office before it’s release, thanks to paid previews. Paid previews for the film on Wednesday evening registered promising footfalls.


The story of the fictional periodic-drama revolves around Rani Padmavati (Deepika Padukone) – the wife of Maharawal Ratan Singh (Shahid Kapoor), who is known for her beauty and valour in 13th century India. She captures the fancy of the reigning Sultan of Delhi, the tyrant Alauddin Khilji (Ranveer Singh), who becomes obsessed with her and goes to great lengths to fulfil his greed.


Bollywood star Ranveer Singh, who has registered his biggest opening day collection with Padmaavat, says most people had told him that a hero shouldn’t play the anti-hero.

Padmaavat, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and produced by Bhansali Productions and Viacom18 Motion Pictures. The film stars Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor in lead roles. Apart from these actors the film also features Jim Sarbh, Aditi Rao Hydari in promising roles.
