Mahabharat 3D is the sole release of the week. Though this may sound like music to ears for many a filmmaker, the fact is that its timing is not all that perfect. Such is the kind of all-around Dhoom 3 wave currently that even in its second week, it would be dominating the show. With the kind of clout that Yash Raj Films enjoys, most major single screens and multiplexes would be continuing to play the Aamir Khan starrer. This means the first battle that Mahabharat – 3D would have to fight, pun intended, is to get an optimal release.
There is also a lot to be desired when it comes to the promotion of this film. With its USP of Bollywood stars being presented in an animated format, the film could have been all over the town while pitching itself as a unique affair. However that hasn’t quite turned out to be the case as the promotion, at best, is just average. For a film of this scale and presentation, a lot more could have been done (and was actually warranted).
All of this means that at the box office, one can’t expect a bumper opening. At best, Mahabharat – 3D may see an opening of 20%-30% and from that point on word of mouth would take over.
