At the first shot Main Tera Hero looked extremely noveau riche to my eyes. It was a shirtless Varun Dhawan stealing the show in its entire run time. But when I went watched it on a loop, something struck me. Varun does a Govinda and he has managed to do quite a job at it. For everyone who has been a part of 90s, Govinda and David Dhawan’s No. 1 series of films is unforgettable. And Varun brings back the glorious memories of the time when comedy was neat and funny without the jokes bordering on sexual innuendos.

Cut to the trailer of Main Tera Hero. Vivaciously covered bright sets. A funny hero. Gorgeous women. And whacky dialogues. We have quite jotted down the recipe that David Dhawan had flourished for years and those neat formulaic film worked every time for their ability to make the audiences laugh their heart out and ass off.

The director along with his writer Milap Zaveri perhaps won’t spare the wonderful idea of making digs at people. From the trailer, the one extremely catchy scene was Varun Dhawan doing a spoof of Ranbir Kapoor from Barfi in an attempt to woo Ileana D’Cruz.

I would have slammed the trailer as just another irreverent piece of clone-ish formula based masala films reigning at the box office. But it took me a real close look at the trailer, almost thrice over to understand why despite the sluggish comedy, it was so hard to dismiss it. Of course, it was David Dhawan who makes you reminiscent of the fluff in 90s’ comedies and mostly a Varun who has managed to come quite close to the enigma of Govinda.

But the audiences’ taste for funny films has changed. They can’t really understand humor unless it is slapped on their face. The humor must be dirty for them to laugh hard. Knowing Dhawan and his style of films, he won’t stoop to ordinary ways just to make people laugh. The man has style and passion and the ability to tickle funny bones better than most newer guns of the film industry.

I won’t bank on the hot Ileana and ravishing Nargis Fakhri for the film. Varun’s shirtless swami and kamina stint is also not my share of interest from the film. I will watch the film expecting the return of Govinda-ish films and ensure David Dhawan still has the midas touch to cause consistent laughter. There is a good chance it won’t match the Govinda levels, but for old times’ sake waiting for the film will be worth a shot!
