It was a role reversal of sorts for Arjun Kapoor and Ranveer Singh in Gunday. The actors, who essay the roles of coal mafias from 70s’ Calcutta, had to push the boundaries of their work and slip into the characters contrary to their personalities despite an easy role in vicinity for them. Their bold and brazen look is definitely most appreciated by all as Ranveer took over the role of Bikram and Arjun played Bala in the film.

After Ali Abbas Zafar gave the actors their joint narration, both Singh and Kpaoor were certain that Ranveer will play Bala and Arjun will grab Bikram. But Zafar had something else in mind.

Though there are more shades of Ranveer in Bala as compared to Bikram and vice versa, the director insisted on them, to experiment more with their roles instead of delivering shades of how people already know them.

Ranveer was signed up to play the angry raging Bikram and Arjun the enthusiastic, flamboyant and boisterous Bala. In keeping with the director’s vision who was confident that there was more of Bikram to Ranveer than visible and vice versa, Gunday was shot and came out convincingly well.

Zafar said, “It was obvious that both Ranveer and Arjun would want choose to do roles that were closest to their own personalities. We had to convince them to do the opposite role.”
