Iceland, with its stunning landscape forged by breathtaking glaciers and angry volcanic forces, is lately turning out to be Hollywood’s favorite filming location, especially for action, fantasy and science-fiction movies. Over the last few years the country's majestic vistas and otherworldly beauty has been prominently featured in many hit TV series and Hollywood blockbusters including Thor: The Dark World, Prometheus, The Game of Thrones, and Christopher Nolan’s epic science-fiction movie Interstellar. As far as Interstellar is concerned, the movie couldn’t have been shot anywhere else. Iceland looks truly like an alien planet.

The icy planet of Dr. Mann as depicted in Interstellar was shot atop Svínafellsjökull Glacier, an outlet of the larger Vatnajökull Glacier in Vatnajökull National Park, east of Skaftafetl, in Iceland. Svínafellsjökull is famous because it is one of the most accessible tongues of Vatnajökull, and suitable for walks and hiking. Vatnajökull is the largest glacier in Iceland covering more than 8 percent of the country, and the largest ice cap in Europe by volume
