Kalki 2898 AD has taken a solid start at the box office in India despite minimal pre-release marketing. The Nag Ashwin film with Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan, and Kamal Haasan has collected in the range of Rs. 23 to 25 crores on its opening day in Hindi. One must note that these numbers have come on a working Thursday, with some areas impacted in Mumbai by heavy rains as well.
That's not all. Kalki has also faced competition from the India vs England World Cup Semi Final game, as the footfalls slowed down in the cinema halls post 6 pm owing to the do-or-die game for India. The film has collected Rs. 10 crores across the national multiplex chains and another Rs. 14 crores from the non-national chains.
Kalki is running neck to neck with the Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone-led Fighter, which also opened at approx. Rs. 24 crore. However, that film had higher ticket rates and the evening shows benefitted due to Republic Day Holiday on the 2nd Day. Kalki 2898 AD will see a dip in business on Friday but then come back to gaining momentum on Saturday and Sunday.
This is a very good start for the film and with a positive talk, the aim will be to grow from strength to strength.
