They came, they saw and they conquered. Amidst a flurry of towering greats and monumental performances, mostly by the women brigade last year, there were also some hugely performance-driven strong male characters and roles that made their way to our almost starving Bolly appetite. From romance to comedy, from action to thrillers, there were not just a plethora of films lined up but each actor went out of their comfort zone to deliver something as magnetic as they did throughout the year.

Let’s take a look at the final list for the Best Actors of 2013.

Akshay Kumar for Special 26:

Although it was a rather dull year for the superstar who usually makes few hundred crores with an array of commercially viable films lined up throughout the year, Special 26 was a magical story that unfolded on screen. Special 26 was a creatively well made poignant film and Akshay did the unconventional, revering his role like no other. From a man who drowns himself in the gibberish number making business and nonsensically mindless flicks, Special 26 came as a welcome respite!

Aditya Roy Kapur for Aashiqui 2:

He had made an entry into Bollywood years ago, but it took him almost four-five years and half a dozen supporting roles to get noticed! That too, with a film, as emotional and connective like Aashiqui 2! The Bhatts had redefined romance with their Aashiqui back in the early ‘90s and after almost two decades when they further decided to give a different dimension to the new age romance, it was almost unparalleled! Strongly associative and relatable, Aditya’s character was the one that tugged at the hearts and evoked the most emotional reactions. And he brilliantly pulled it off!

John Abraham for Shootout At Wadala and Madras Cafe:

Even till April last year, John Abraham was known only for his one and half expressions with which he used to emote in every film of his. But the tides turned and his Manya Surve instigated the power packed performer within him. Definitely a revelation of sorts, it was one of those rare times that we saw John Abraham act so wonderfully on screen. Playing the gangster with the menacing looks yet donning the role of a lover with utmost conviction, Shootout At Wadala brought out the best in John until he reinvented himself with his career best role, in Madras Café. One of the best political thrillers of all times, John Abraham simple bespectacled with his Major Vikram Singh act and outscored all his other heavyweight contemporaries who had earlier tried doing the same with their socio-political thrillers. John gave a nuanced and deliciously balanced performance and shouldered the film towards success! Keep this momentum going, dude.

Ranbir Kapoor for Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani:

He had been gifting us some marvelous performances throughout consistently for the past two years and even this year, he kind of made a brilliant concoction of witty and emotional with Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. After a lip smacking Rockstar and a sweetly touching tale of a deaf and mute guy in Barfi!, Ranbir got back to his usual self with Ayan Mukerji’s Gen-Y take on mushy romances. With Ranbir’s eyes doing the talking and his maneuvers adding a new gravitas to the film altogether, he coupled it up with Deepika Padukone to make YJHD another heartwarming yet fun and frothy love tale!

Farhan Akhtar for Bhaag Milkha Bhaag:

Undoubtedly the most inspirational performance of the year, Farhan Akhtar delivered his smashing best in his career with the cleverly created biopic on Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. The angst, the tension, the nervous pangs and the pangs of sighs, disbelief and most importantly the sweet taste of success: Farhan’s version of Milkha Singh encapsulated all this and much more. The accidental actor suddenly treasured the new found actor in him as the director kind of made sure he extracted the best out of Farhan! Doing the unconventional will never be the same henceforth, all thanks to a certain director who thankfully took a wise decision of taking the ‘Lights, Camera. Action’ route, the other way round!

Shah Rukh Khan for Chennai Express:

At a time when his other contemporaries were roaring at the box office with huge mammoth numbers and smashing box office records, SRK chose to do the different by sticking to his usual line up of films. But when he decided to take the Action Entertainer road to fame, he thundered it with élan! In a mad cap comedy of errors, by the maestro Rohit Shetty, SRK revamped his Rahul avatar and created something so beautifully delicate yet romantic and lovable that the Common Man became the new hero! He not only acted wonderfully (Like always!), he also made sure that his film turns out to be a huge money spinner. After all, ‘Don’t underestimate the power of a common man’! Yanna rascala, mind it!

Hrithik Roshan for Krrish 3:

He returned on screen after a year and half long hiatus with his adrenaline pumping action stunts and grueling scenes. Yes, he was all set to turn on the superhero mode yet again but this time, he kind of did the same on a much grander scale! Hrithik Roshan did the inane and extremely unbelievable, dumb moves with assumed ease and somehow brought it alive on screen! And we bet, no one else could have done the same. And no one might just have had the ability to pull off a Krrish 3 as nicely as this one man! Time for a Krrish 4, maybe? But this time, please try and be a little more original!

Ranveer Singh for Lootera and Goliyon Ki Raasleela – Ramleela:

This year definitely belonged to Ranveer Singh. While Farhan did wonders with one film, Ranveer somehow toppled it with two breathtaking performances. Be it the silent, brooding con man Varun or the gutsy tapori-ish Ram, Ranveer delivered two different roles with sheer brilliance and ease! He almost perfected the role in Lootera, bringing back the voices to the silences and roared like a lion with Ramleela. If subtle and delicious was what had it going for him in Lootera, it was the brawny machismo and the captivating and pulsating love that made heads turn in Ramleela. Invigorating, energetic and blasting like a total bomb, Ranveer somehow returned back to the fore proving his mettle like no other. We loves yous, mahn!

Aamir Khan for Dhoom 3:

He has always taken up grueling challenges and lived upto them! And this time was no different! With Dhoom 3, Aamir Khan did something that we would have never expected him to. Some breath taking action sequences to adrenaline pumping high octane stunt shots, Aamir did all and without much of a difficulty. And that helped his year end with a Dhoom! The shades that he brought to the characters was amazing and the layered texture that he presented the emotional quotient of the film with, was awesome.
