Vivek Agnihotri’s latest release The Bengal Files had a poor opening at the Indian box office. Unlike his last film, The Kashmir Files, this one failed to attract audiences to theaters. The release timing also worked against it, as several big Bollywood and Hollywood films are currently competing for screen space. The movie has received mixed reviews from both critics and audiences, leaving very little chance for a strong jump in collections over the weekend. It seems the makers should have reconsidered this release date, especially since the film does not feature any big stars. Perhaps the blockbuster success of The Kashmir Files gave them the confidence, but every film has a different plot, and the success of one does not guarantee the success of another.

Looking at the current trend, the film is expected to collect around ₹20–25 crores at the Indian box office, which means it will likely fail to recover its cost from the theatrical run. The Bengal Files portrays the tragic events surrounding Direct Action Day, also known as the Great Calcutta Killings, on 16 August 1946. The film’s budget is estimated to be around ₹40–50 crores, and it was released on 5 September 2025.
