The Bengal Files is an upcoming Bollywood political drama directed by Vivek Agnihotri. It marks the third installment in Agnihotri’s “Files Trilogy” on modern Indian history, following The Tashkent Files (2019) and The Kashmir Files (2022).
The film is based on the events of Direct Action Day on 16 August 1946, also known as the Great Calcutta Killings, which unleashed widespread communal violence. The unrest soon spread beyond Calcutta to other parts of the Bengal Presidency, including the Noakhali riots of 1946 and violence in Tipperah (present-day Comilla, Bangladesh). Through its cinematic narrative, The Bengal Files depicts these tragic real-life incidents of communal strife that profoundly influenced India’s journey toward independence and partition. The film is scheduled for theatrical release on 5 September 2025.
