Description: Sampan's Rating: A- 1989 was an outstanding year for a Hong Kong cinema fan, and it was an especially astounding year for Chow Yun Fat fans. While we had smash hits like "God of Gamblers", "The Killer", and "All About Ah Long", we also got this more subdued gem "Wild Search" starring Chow Yun Fat and Cherie Chung. In a rough remake of 1985's "Witness" from Peter Weir, Chow and Cherie added another classic on-screen chemistry pairing after previous collabs like "An Autumn's Tale" and "The Eighth Happiness". This is also Chow Yun Fat's third collaboration with director Ringo Lam in their legendary canon of "On Fire" films and "Full Contact", and the direction does not disappoint. This is a finely crafted, warmly acted romantic action crime drama with simply all the right ingredients--Chow and Cherie's romance is natural and endlessly watchable, action is gritty, brutal, and well-staged (highlights include a classically filmed, chaotic bar shootout), Roy Cheung is Ringo Lam's always excellent maniac as a a killer with a grudge, and Tommy Wong is reliable as ever as Chow's police partner. While the film is weighed down an over-the-top antagonist essayed by the usually awesome Paul Chun and an overuse of Teresa Tang's classic song "The Moon Represents My Heart" (cue romantic montage with this song), "Wild Search" is another one for the books for Chow Yun Fat, Cherie Chung, Ringo Lam. Watch it! Plot: When a botched drug bust kills a mother and leaves a 5-year old girl as witness, a police inspector is tasked with stopping a vengeful triad gang from silencing anyone associated with the girl.
