Description: Best Thriller Movie by Jake Gyllenhaal Movie's Explanation The spider is a representation of 'women' in his subconscious. Throughout the movie, we see spiders – over the city; that inverted naked woman walking with the spider's face; a spider coming out of the bowl at the brothel in the beginning etc. The spiders walking fearlessly and unabashed indicates that his(Jake Gyllenhaal) life is being controlled by women because of his never-ending lust, which makes him chase women even though he is married. He is actually a professor in real life. But the very fact that he is a professor and married, was eating him from the inside for what a boring life he is living. He wanted to be an actor with a lifestyle, good clothing only so that he could have women around him for his desires. So he starts pursuing acting as a side profession. But the moment his wife gets pregnant, he loses his mind and gets shattered as this is a very big responsibility now and will get into his glamorous world that he has dreamt of. So, he stops going to the acting institute as he is stuck between two lifestyles– the boring professor lifestyle that is real and the cool actor lifestyle that he actually wants to live. The professor's girlfriend part is hypothetical. It's his imagination. That's what he wanted. A sweet wife but also a gf on the side as a fuck buddy. His visits to brothel is reality, coz in reality he does not have a side fuck buddy. So he visits the brothel with his guard and becomes a permanent member for future visits. While all this was happening, a man at the college tells him about a movie after watching which he gets suspicious of something. After meeting this same looking guy, he discovers that his personality has been split and both these guys are the same. He realizes that his desire for women is what is making him create a separate persona that would be attractive to women (actor) and leave aside the real persona which is not very attractive to women (professor). This battle of desires is costing him his marriage. So he decides to kill off the fake actor personality and permanently come back to his wife as a professor and live a happy life. So the gf trading conversation was a hypothetical scenario in his head and the accident of the actor with the hot gf is also a hypothetical scenario. The announcement at the radio is about a different accident which was deliberately put to deceive the audience. After that, his wife realizes that his actual husband (professor) is back and she becomes happy. His dilemma was that his life was being dominated and controlled by women. He wanted it to be the other way round where he dominates and controls them. So, in the end, he discovers the key to the brothel and tells his wife that he won't be coming home in the evening. That tells that no matter what happens, a man who has been succumbed into lust can never come out of that desire no matter what he does. He chooses to keep visiting the brothel secretly and be with his wife as a good husband but still be strong without being controlled by women. She doesn't ask where he is going in the evening. So, the fearlessly walking spider over his life has turned into a fearful spider under his control. That's why Helen turned into a big spider who is scared of him. He feels he finally came out of the web of every women but still sorrows over the fact that he needs a brothel.
