Hrithik Roshan and N. T. Rama Rao Jr.’s much-awaited film War 2 has finally hit the big screen, releasing on August 14, 2025, with a strong start at the Indian box office. Directed by Ayan Mukerji and produced by Yash Raj Films, the movie is part of the hugely popular YRF Spy Universe and serves as the action-packed follow-up to the 2019 blockbuster War. War 2 generated massive buzz ahead of its release, particularly because it features the first-ever onscreen faceoff between Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR. As expected, the opening day saw strong numbers, with an especially impressive response in the Telugu states thanks to Jr NTR’s massive fan base. However, despite its promising start, the film is unlikely to surpass the opening records set by the first War movie. One major reason for this is the tough competition it faces at the box office. Rajinikanth’s Coolie, which released on the same day, has been dominating the Independence Day weekend with record-breaking advance bookings and huge fan turnouts. In addition, Mahavatar Narsimha is also performing well in certain regions, further dividing audience attention.

War 2 has received a mixed response from both critics and audiences. The performances of Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR, along with the spectacular action sequences and top-notch visual effects, have been widely praised. On the flip side, several critics have pointed out that the story feels predictable and, at times, overly flashy, lacking the freshness fans expect from a big-ticket franchise film. With an estimated budget of around ₹400 crore, War 2 ranks among the most expensive Indian films ever made. To break even from its theatrical run, it will need to sustain strong box office collections for at least two weeks. As of now, its long-term performance will depend heavily on positive word of mouth and its ability to maintain momentum beyond the Independence Day holiday weekend.
